Slumbering giants stir as top two win again

Veterans' League

Review of the 10-Man League fixtures played on Tuesday 26 April

Kirkheaton Con 'A' and Marsh United 'A' continue to set the pace at the top of the Division 1 table with both extending their winning runs to four marches with big away wins this week. The Kirkheaton side stay top after a 7-2 win at Lindley Lib 'A' but the Marsh 6-3 result was equally as big as it came at Lindley BC 'A' where it is notoriously difficult for away teams to win.

Golcar Lib 'A' returned to winning ways by beating Longwood 6-3 to reclaim third place overtaking their Cowcliffe opponents and also passing Waterloo who didn't have a match. Rastrick moved up to fourth spot and were unlucky to only take four points from their visit to Clayton West when losing the aggregate bonus points by a two-point margin (123-125).

The two slumbering Division 1 giants of Lockwood Con 'A' and Elland C&BC 'A' have been stirred into action after indifferent and uncharacteristic starts to the season. Both teams won this week as Lockwood won for the first time this season with a 7-2 home win over Meltham who replace them at the bottom of the table. Meanwhile, Elland beat Longwood 6-3 which leaves Longwood as the only team in the top division still looking for their first win of the season.

Milnsbridge 'A' lost for the first time this season in their Division 2 encounter away at Shepley by 7-2 who move into second place as a result and are just a point off the leaders now. Hemplow 'A' own the division's only unbeaten record which they extended to four games when seeing off the visiting Thongsbridge 'A' team 5-4. They are now also one point behind the leaders in a crowded top half of the table with only 4 points between the top six teams.

Broad Oak 'A', Lowerhouses and Bradley & Colne are in that top six and all had good wins this week. After a full season of losing all 13 away Division 2 matches last season Bradley & Colne have started this year by winning both their away matches to date the latest being an 8-1 victory at Thorpe Green. Broad Oak 'A' and Lowerhouses both had expected home wins over Brockholes 'A' (8-1) and Lockwood Con 'B' (6-3) respectively to condemn their opponents to another week in the bottom two places. 6-3 Home wins for New Mill 'A' and Slaithwaite completes the Division 2 summary.

There are new leaders in Division 3 as the leading three teams all won again and they each have Played-4 Won-4 records to date. Holmfirth 'A' jumped two places to the top of the pile after beating Lindley Lib 'B' 8-1. Linthwaite Hall and Paddock I&C continue to remain close in 2nd and 3rd places with just one point separating the top three. A 6-3 home win for Linthwaite Hall and the same scoreline outcome for Paddock I&C as they defeated Golcar Lib 'B' and Denby Dale respectively.

First wins of the season for Kirkheaton C&BC 'A' when they beat bottom team Marsh United 'B' 7-2 and Skel Windmill with a 6-3 away win at Springwood keeps them both in the bottom four but on an upward incline. A good 6-3 home win over Huddersfield Recreation Club for Almondbury Lib keeps them safely in mid-table.

The two teams with 100% win records in Division 4 both got beaten this week as Ravensknowle Park lost 3-6 at the Rugby Club but retain the top spot but by the reduced margin of 3 points to New Mill 'B' who won 6-3 away at Milnsbridge 'B'. Primrose Hill Lib ended Outlane's impressive start to the season and inflicted a first defeat on their visitors with a grand 8-1 scoreline which resulted in them dropping from second to sixth position.

Brockholes 'B' came close to picking up their first win of 2022 when going down 4-5 at home to Meltham who took the aggregate 120-115 to collect the bonus points. In the remaining match Thongsbridge 'B' halted Lindley BC 'B's charge to the top when beating them 6-3.

The top three teams in Division 5 started the week within two points of each other but all lost their matches this week resulting in two of those teams dropping out of the picture whilst Broad Oak 'B' do go top from second despite losing 4-5 away at Netherton Con 'B'. There are still 2 points between the top 3 teams but the two main pursuers are now Kirkheaton Con 'B' who beat previous leaders Greenhead Park 8-1 and Marsh Lib who beat the previous third-placed team, Dalton by 6-3.
