Huddersfield 28-28 Aire & Wharfe

The Huddersfield Veterans Inter-District team had another disappointing result when only drawing 28-28 with Aire & Wharfe on Friday and so remain on just two wins from seven matches all season. This was against a team which was one of only four teams below them in the table. The home team had another big win but that was still the worst overall result, the only one that counts, against these opponents since they joined the competition. A home win counts for nothing if the overall result is not a team win and reveals the gap between our team and the big boys in the competition. We can no longer be counted among those numbers but could still claim 3rd place with a big final day victory.

Congratulations to the West Riding team who are odds-on to collect the title although there is still one more round of fixtures to be played. But with a 53-point lead over second-placed Leeds they can sit out the final round of matches in confidence, knowing that no team has ever scored the 53 points in one match that Leeds need to prevent the West Riding team walking away with the trophy. Leeds managed 45 points from their last match over Castleford but their final day opponents, Skipton, are likely to offer more resistance than that.

The 28 points that the Huddersfield team collected last Friday was sufficient to hitch them up a place to fourth spot but the final round of fixtures is likely to result in that being seriously threatened by a Halifax team playing 2nd from bottom Wakefield, and Aire & Wharfe who take on bottom team Castleford. Looking on the positive side, the Huddersfield team need to beat their final opponents, Bradford, by a 40-16 scoreline to move up into 3rd place.

Just for a bit of fun (do you remember fun?) I am going to select my Home and Away teams for the last match of the season versus Bradford.
