Bowling News
ALL OUR YESTERDAYS
Continuing our out-of-season dip into the history books to share the match programme from the Yorkshire Championships for the News of the World title in 1954. This competition was played at Moldgreen Cons and featured 6 Huddersfield bowlers with D. Jenkinson of Crosland Moor Liberal Club with a handicap of 1 running out the eventual winner.
The programme for the 19th running of this annual competition also shows that it had previously been held at Springwood in 1942 and 1943 and also at another 5 Huddersfield greens between 1936 and 1954.
Huddersfield based bowlers also took the ultimate prize on 8 occasions with representatives of Slaithwaite C&BC, Broad Oak, Linthwaite C&BC (twice), Springwood, Cowcliffe Liberal, Thornton Lodge and New Mill lifting the trophy. There were also a number of runners-up and the full programme for the 1954 competition is shown below. Interestingly the programme is shown on the front cover to be reserved for one of the competitors, F Ellis of Bramley one of two scratch bowlers in the competition that were seeded to meet in the Final.
