Winter League

Mike Ralph has decided to stand down from his position as Chairman of the Winter League with immediate effect. Mike took on this position when the League was first founded and has been a key player in establishing the League on the local bowling scene. His support of my position as League Secretary has been unwavering and I have always respected his thinking and approach to problem solving and the leadership he has provided during some difficult times over the last six years. I will miss his contribution very much.
In his letter of resignation Mike talks about his changing personal circumstances which lie behind this decision and timing. He says "I do not have the energy or will and therefore the capability of being able to bring any benefit to the League any longer."
The fact that Mike emphasises that his resignation be taken with immediate effect will prompt speculation among some about another reason for standing down. Bob and I as the other two League Officials have not fallen out with him we remain good friends and despite our best efforts Mike is adamant that now is the right time for him to stand aside and he reminds me that he is now 82 years of age.
He is also very clear that he wants to go quietly and that there be no special mention of his involvement in the future. It doesn't seem right to me that he should be allowed to go without us expressing our thanks and good wishes for the future but that is what Mike wants so that should be respected.
Mike had spoken about stepping aside for the last 18 months and only agreed to extend his time in the position on the understanding that Bob and I would tell him directly we noted any symptoms of him struggling in the role. We never did see such signs at any time but maybe Mike had a different perspective on that.
That of course means that we do have a vacancy at present - some interest and developments on this later I hope.
