Veterans 6-Man League
Review of league fixtures played on 16 August
Last week we reported on the Shepley stutter in form opening up the Section A title race with Netherton Con responding most strongly to get within a point of the leaders and enhance their chances of a second consecutive title. What a difference a week makes! Shepley responded the most strongly to that threat completing this week's only 7-0 whitewash win when travelling to play lowly Oakfield. Whereas the Netherton team had the stronger challenge of 4th placed Milnsbridge to face and they folded going down 1-6 to return to a race for the runners-up spot with Thongsbridge B drawing level with them. Both teams are now 7 points behind the leaders as the Thongsbridge outfit recorded a 6-1 home win over Brockholes 'A' who drop a place to 5th as a result. Shepley have to face both Netherton Con and Thongsbridge 'B' over the next 3 Tuesdays so that will resolve some of the issues. That defeat for Oakfield saw them drop to the foot of the table being passed by Longwood and Lindley Lib who both won this week. Longwood beat fellow strugglers Paddock I&C whilst Lindley Lib had a good away win at Crosland Moor to drag them into the relegation fight as well.
It is a similar story in Section B as deposed leaders Honley Con bounced back from last week's defeat to return to the summit after a 4-3 away win which ended Clayton West's 100% home record. The Honley team had taken a 1-6 hammering the previous week to Golcar C&BC who went clear at the top as a result but it was their turn to feel the pressure of leading the section this week going down 2-5 to third-placed Skel Windmill 'B' and conceding top spot as a result. A 6-1 home win for Marsh United over Skel Windmill 'A' saw them leapfrog their opponents into 4th place and move within touching distance of the second promotion place. The bottom two teams met at Primrose Hill Lib where the home side recorded their first win of the season overcoming Golcar Lib 5-2 but they are still 10 points adrift of their opponents and 12 points off safety.
The two teams engaged in the fight for the second promotion place from Section C met this week and it was Holmfirth 'A' who made home advantage work for them with a 5-2 win which opened up the gap between them and Almondbury Lib to 5 points. Meanwhile Slaithwaite continued their pursuit of the title with a 6-1 away win at Marsh Lib and now have an eight point lead at the top. Nearer the foot of the table saw Brockholes 'B' use their aggregate advantage (73-71) to claim the majority of the points, 4-3, over Thongsbridge 'A' and go ahead of them in the revised table due to a better 'Aggregate For' total.
