Veterans League vacancy

Veterans League

The Veterans League has circulated all clubs with notice of a change to it's meeting arrangements and other information as reprinted below. What this notice doesn't tell clubs is that David Sykes, the League & Competition Secretary, has told the Management Committee that he will not be standing for the position of Competition Secretary for the 2023 season. David will continue as League Secretary but has found that performing both roles is no longer doable for him.

David gave formal notice 12 months ago but has continued in a dual role after no one came forward to take on the Competition Secretary role. He told me recently that he has made it very clear to the Management Committee that he can no longer perform both positions and will reduce his commitment for the 2023 season and I have his permission to publish that.

The notice below asks all clubs to update their Bowlsnet player records by adding the BCGBA numbers where missing and ensuring that the date of birth is correct and complete. What the notice doesn't say is that this facility to update these records is not available to clubs and has to be updated via the League's Bowlsnet Administrator.

The full communication from the League's General Secretary to all clubs is below.

The HVBA Management Committee met on Monday 15 August and I have been asked to bring you up-to-date with a change of date for the 6-monthly General Meeting. Due to our season now extending to 3 and 4 October we didn’t feel that a 10 October meeting gave our League and Competitions Secretary enough time to receive final results and have trophies engraved ready for presentation on 10 October so the new date for the General Meeting and prize presentation will be Monday 17 October. The event will be held at Meltham Sports and Community Club at 2 pm. All club representatives are expected to attend as important decisions are taken at this meeting appertaining to the 2023 season, in particular approval of the bye-laws and subscriptions. Moving the date to 17 October gives clubs an extra week if they have any changes to bye-laws that they wish to discuss at the meeting as they have to be tabled 42 days prior to the meeting which is effectively 29 August. Any proposal for a rule change must be signed by the representative of the proposing club and the representative of another club seconding the proposal. The proposals will be forwarded to all club representatives who must submit any amendments to the proposals within 28 days of the meeting – 12 September. Rule changes may also be recommended by the Management Committee. Hot weather As we are likely to have more hot days in future seasons we wish to remind you of our earlier advice regarding postponement of matches. We now accept that extremely hot weather can be just as dangerous as what we used to class as ‘bad weather’ and captains can therefore agree to postpone matches in these conditions. Our bye-laws cover re-arrangements of matches satisfactorily. Player welfare is paramount. Water breaks are permitted during matches in these circumstances. Bowlsnet player records Can club reps and captains please check their player records to ensure that all BCGBA numbers are recorded and the dates-of-birth are correct. The dates of birth are only visible on Bowlsnet by club admins and not visible to any other browsers. Please delete deceased bowlers and those who are not likely to play again. Try Bowling Huddersfield Bowls Development held a Try Bowling event in Greenhead Park which was well attended and introduced would-be bowlers to the game some of whom have already turned up at clubs. This is an initiative started by HVBA and 10 bowlers have now qualified as Level 1 coaches thanks to an initiative of Phil Warbrick. Many of the qualified coaches helped would-be bowlers in Greenhead Park and have helped individual clubs with their recruitment. The Try Bowling event is being repeated in Greenhead Park on bank holiday Monday 29 August from 12 noon to 3 pm so if you have people interested in taking up our sport please advise them of the next date and please do your best to spread the word. I’ll forward you a poster of the event to print and display in your club and also a version that you could put on Facebook or other social media platforms. That’s all for now but you will be hearing from us shortly about the October meeting and with any proposed rule changes.
