Veterans Bistro down to final 32 teams

League News

It was the opening round of the Bistro Knock-Out for the Veterans' 10-Man League yesterday with all 58 teams going into the hat. Ten teams decided to wtihdraw before the opening round and we are now down to the final 32 teams.

One thing you can always rely on in the Bistro is that there will be shock results and giant-killing acts played out. The unique 5-Pairs format with aggregate score determining the winners is different from what many of the teams are used to and some adapt better than others.

The three teams that caused the biggest opening round upsets this week all come from Section 4 and are Lindley BC 'B', Primrose Hill Lib and Milnsbridge 'B' but before we get into the giant-killing acts a word about Marsh United 'A'. For the second time in 7 days they have beaten Lockwood Con the reigning Section 1 Champions. Following on from their 8-1 league win last week with a 93-88 success in the Bistro yesterday and now they go to face one of the giant-killing teams when they will meet Milnsbridge 'B' from Section 4 who knocked out Section 1 side Crosland Moor 100-95.

Another Section 4 side, Lindley BC 'B' also had a memorable Bistro result with 119-81 victory over Section 2 leaders Thorpe Green who could only field 8 bowlers. That win sets them up for a Round 2 tie against another giant-killing team following Primrose Hill Lib's 110-106 win over Bradley & Colne from Section 2.

Apart from the Marsh Utd 'A' v Lockwood Con 'A' tie there were two more all-Section 1 meetings where Thongsbridge 'A' belied their lowly league position to beat Longwood 86-84 and Cowcliffe overcame Netherton Con 109-81.

Round 1 wins also for Hemplow 'B', Almondbury BC 'B', Brockholes 'A', Holmfirth 'A', Skel Windmill, Kirkheaton Con 'A', Clayton West, Thongsbridge 'B', Lindley BC 'A', Shepley, New Mill 'A', Milnsbridge 'A' as well as both the Golcar Lib teams. Add to those the 10 teams that progressed through byes brings the Round 2 to be played on Thursday 24 June looking like this:
