Veterans League
Review of the results from matches played in the 10-Man League on Tuesday 27 September
Three of the five division titles have now been settled with Divisions 1 and 4 still outstanding. In Division 4 there is the prize of promotion for a team missing out on the title but there is no such consolation in Division 1. The chase for the title can only have one winner and has just two runners still involved as Lockwood Con 'A' dropped out of contention when losing 2-7 away at Rastrick yesterday however they can still collect the runners-up spot.
The only team standing in the way of Golcar Lib 'A' winning the title for the first time since 2005 is Kirkheaton Con 'A' who they play in the final match of the season next Tuesday. There are two possible outcomes to this match. In the unlikely scenario of Kirkheaton Con 'A' winning 9-0 then they will be Champions. Any other scoreline will ensure that the Golcar side wins the top prize. It could have been tighter but the Kirkheaton team lost their last home match of the season 4-5 to Marsh United yesterday.
At the wrong end of the table Lindley Lib 'A' were already relegated but went out with a good 5-4 away win at Waterloo and have been joined by neighbours Lindley BC 'A' who despite still having one match to play are relegated after a 3-6 away defeat at Longwood.
Milnsbridge Captain, Jim Baxter, secured the point needed by Milnsbridge to win the Division 2 Championship at Thongsbridge when being first off the green after a 21-8 win. The rest of the team followed to clock up a 7-2 title-winning result.
Lowerhouses stormed up from 4th to claim 2nd place and the second promotion spot when overtaking New Mill 'A' after a 9-0 home win over them on Tuesday. They also leapfrogged Almondbury BC 'A' despite them winning 7-2 at home to Broad Oak 'A'.
Thorpe Green needed two points from their final match of the season away at Netherton Con and they duly obliged in a 3-6 defeat. With Lockwood Con 'B' going down 4-5 at home to Shepley 'A' to join Brockholes 'A' in Division 3 next season.
Linthwaite Hall have been nailed on for some while to take the Division 3 title and they duly obliged but who goes up with them remains up in the air. Holmfirth 'A' finished their fixtures with an 8-1 home win over Springwood and are 5 points ahead of Golcar Lib 'B' who play their final match away at bottom-of-the-table Marsh United 'B' who need a 9-0 win themselves to stave off relegation and send Springwood down with Lindley Lib 'B'.
The Division 4 title race is still in the balance but heavily weighted in favour of the current leaders Meltham 'B'. A 7-2 away win at Lindley BC 'B' on Tuesday sent them 8 points clear of Outlane who are the only team that can now overtake them. Both teams are already promoted and Outlane need a 9-0 win at the Rugby Club next Tuesday to pip Meltham to the title.
New Mill 'B' are already relegated but who goes down with them has still to be decided with 4 points separating Brockholes 'B', Milnsbridge 'B' and Elland C&BC 'B' and all three have one more match to play next Tuesday. Two of those three meet up at Brockholes where the Elland side are the visitors with every chance that the losers will be going down. Milnsbridge 'B' are home to Ravensknowle Park who are not good travellers and with nothing to play for may present a good chance of securing survival for Milnsbridge.
Everything is now sorted in Division 5 as Kirkheaton Con are the title winners despite losing for only the second time this season at Dalton 2-7 (the league table alongside does not include this result). Marsh Lib will be joining them in moving up a level next year after edging their match at home to Netherton Con 'B' 5-4. Hemplow 'B' and Holmfirth 'B' both collected 4 points from their Tuesday matches which confirms that the Hemplow side will remain at the foot of the table.
