Veterans League
The traditional double-header of two Veterans League Finals being played on the same day on the same green is lined up for this coming Friday at Kirkheaton C&BC. First off at 1.30pm are the two semi-finals of the Over-80's KO followed by the 3-Pairs Final of the Julie Fuller Trophy and then the two Over-80's finalists go head-to-head for the 2021 title.
In the Over-80's there is one previous winner still in contention as Frank Greenwood of Golcar Lib, the 2018 winner, takes on Roy Sutton of Meltham who has a 3-handicap advantage. In the other semi-final is Gordon Walker of Kirkheaton Con, the 2019 runner-up, and he will be hoping to progress when meeting Geoff Firth of Elland who has to give his opponent a one-handicap start.
There will be a new name of the Julie Fuller Trophy this year as the different format Julie Fuller Trophy competition will peak with the Final between Slaithwaite and Marsh United. With the Section C leaders, Slaithwaite, having a six-point handicap start on their Section B opponents, they will start as favourites. These two teams filled the top two places in the League Phase of this competition which is quite an achievement for a Slaithwaite side playing their first season in the 6-Man League.
All bowlers are reminded that the League will be enforcing a strict dress code of black trousers and collared shirts for both Finals and anyone not complying will not be allowed to play.
This particular day has been blighted with atrocious weather over recent years with the 2016 event held at the same Kirkheaton C&BC venue only saved from being called off by the interval use of the club's wonderful Squeegy-Roller as depicted below. Then the 2019 event at Hemplow was again affected by heavy rain with two corners of the green being called out of bounds by the match referee, Ray Tunnacliffe. Then of course last year the competition wasn't held at all due to the CIVID pandemic so we are due a good year from all the elements this time around.
