Veterans 10-Man League
It wasn't a great week for section leaders in the 10-Man League as well as the 6-Man with just 2 of the 5 tasting victory this week. Section 1 leaders Lockwood Con 'A' were among that group as they suffered defeat at Longwood this week to contribute to an adverse 6-point swing in their lead over Elland C&BC 'A' who won 9-0 away at Lindley Lib 'A'. Between them sits Golcar Lib 'A' who also pulled the leaders in nearer with a massive 8-1 away win at Cowcliffe although they have played a game more than their nearest rivals. Waterloo's dropped to fourth when their unreliable away form let them down at lowly Crosland Moor who eased their own relegation concerns with a 6-3 scoreline. The bottom two, Thongsbridge 'A' and Netherton Con 'A' both lost their matches this week and the plight worsened when Meltham 'A' also picked up 7 points from their home match with Rastrick.
The fixture between the top two teams in Section 2 fell victim to COVID in one camp but Kirkheaton Con's 21 point lead was preserved as Thorpe Green scored 6 points from their home match with Brockholes 'A' to go level with Lindley BC 'A' in second place. A win for Broad Oak 'A' would have seen them go second but they suffered a 1-8 loss at resurgent New Mill 'A' who have now won their last 6 matches although they remain sixth. Paddock I&C drop into bottom place again after losing 0-9 at Bradley & Colne and were passed by Kirkheaton C&BC 'A' who collected 2 points at Shepley.
Lowerhouses were top of Section 3 due to a superior 'Aggregate For' total so when they went down 2-7 at third-placed Holmfirth 'A' they fully expected to relinquish that lead as their co-leaders Slaithwaite had a home fixture against mid-table Skel Windmill. However, a shock first home defeat of the season for Slaithwaite, again by 2-7, maintained the previous positions although Holmfirth 'A' and Golcar Lib 'B', 7-2 home winners over Marsh United 'B', have closed the gaps to the promotion places which are now down to single figures.
Section 4 leaders Denby Dale did win their match this week, 5-4 away at Elland C&BC 'B', but that wasn't enough to keep them at the top as they were overtaken by Huddersfield Recreation Club who won 8-1 at Thongsbridge 'B'. Denby Dale have played one match less than their table-top rivals as have the chasing pack but they are 19 points adrift of the top and increasingly it looks like this will be the first section to declare that the promotion battle is over with just the business of the order of the top two to be sorted which could even last until early September when the runaway two meet each other on the Moldgreen lawn.
The top two in Section 5 both had big wins this week to open up the gap to Marsh Lib in third place to 10 points. The leaders Huddersfield RUBC had a whitewash 9-0 home win over David Brown Sports whilst New Mill 'B' won 8-1 away at Hemplow 'B'. The bottom four teams all lost their games this week which now means that there are just 7 points between them.
