Veterans League
The climax is building in the Yorkshire Veterans Inter-District competition as the top four teams in the table play each other this Friday. The Huddersfield team has a 12 points lead at present but this Friday they take on the surprise package of 2nd-placed Leeds returning to the competition for the first time since pre-Covid. They had never previously figured prominently in the competition but that all changed this season when they have been a massive presence throughout.
This is the first year that Leeds have entered the competition since 2019, pre Covid and prior to the reduction of the age limit to 60, and therefore have a completely different team from pre-Covid days. Previously, although a regular member of the competition, they had never figured in the top half of the table but that has all changed this year. They’ve surprised a few teams this season and they currently sit in second place in the table.
The Huddersfield home team are playing once again at Marsh United with an earlier than usual start time of 12 noon as Leeds want to pay their respects to a departed member later that day.
The away team playing at Rothwell BC is Tony Butterfield, Malcolm Gilbert (C), Edwin Haigh, Derrick Hewitt, Peter Hopkinson, Dave Pollard, Tim Poulter, Garry Senior. Reserves Roger Stopford, John Burnett.
The home team playing at Marsh United are Alan Bamforth, John Bloomer, Robert Dickinson, Eddie Haigh, Steve Haigh, Peter Kain, Gary Sigsworth, Ray Whitwam. Reserve Barry Gibson.
The teams in 3rd and 4th places also go head-to-head this Friday as reigning Champions West Riding take on Bradford and, with 56 points at stake in each match, things can change very rapidly. This could also bring 5th-placed Halifax into contention as they play bottom-of-the-table Castleford and are within striking distance of the top four.
