Veterans League

A review of the 6-Man League matches played on Monday 11 July

The top three teams in Division 1 all won their home fixtures this week as expected but still shuffled places among themselves. An impressive whitewash 9-0 win for Honley Con over Milnsbridge (without an away win all season) put them at the top of the table but with only a single-point lead over their two main rivals. That deposed Shepley 'A' of the top spot after they were pushed all the way by fourth-placed Crosland Moor and only a better aggregate enabled them to come out 4-3 winners and they end up the week in second place.

Golcar C&BC duly despatched Longwood with a regulation 6-1 score to go third and keep themselves very much in the frame for the end-of-season honours. Crosland Moor's defeat allowed Brockholes 'A' to overtake them into fourth place after a comfortable 6-1 home win over Thongsbridge 'B'.

Lindley Lib 'A' lost at home to Netherton Con 2-5 which means that they very much remain in danger of dropping out of the top division come the end of the season. Their plight won't be helped by the outstanding match from this week's programme as the two teams nearest to them clash at Lockwood Cons on Friday with the already doomed Linthwaite Hall as visitors.

Skel Windmill 'A' saw off the Division 2 challenge from Clayton West to pass them in the table but a 5-2 win for the home side saw the Windmill hang on to 3rd place but fail to make any inroads into the top two's lead.

Marsh United made it 8 wins from 9 starts this season and continue to set a fast pace at the top. Slaithwaite

won 5-2 away at Meltham to hang on to the leader's coat-tails but comfortably 7 points ahead of the third placed team. However the 50% rule will kick-in next week with Slaithwaite likely to be as severely affected by it as any team with the impact on their 6-man team's promotion and Julie Fuller Trophy defence unknown at this time.

Skel Windmill 'B' lost 1-6 at Paddock I&C to stay bottom but only 4 points off a safe 8th place so remain hopeful of recapturing their early season form. A repeat of the local Windmill Derby result from April when the two club sides meet again next week would go a long way to preserving their Division 2 presence for another season.

Three of the five fixtures in Division 3 ended in 7-0 scorelines including the top two teams who both won their matches. The leaders Golcar Lib beating Shepley 'B' and Almondbury Lib overwhelming Greenhead Park so the gap between the top two remains at 4 points. With Marsh Lib going down 2-5 at Primrose Hill Lib they lost ground on the top two and they are now six points off a promotion place. The third 7-0 scoreline came at Holmfirth 'B' who moved up 3 places to 5th and passing their opponents, Marsh United 'B', in the process.
