Top 2 in Division 3 lose to open up title race

Veterans League

Review of the results in the Veterans 6-Man League of matches played on Monday 14 August

The top two teams in Division 3 both lost by the same 3-4 scoreline this week to raise the hopes of at least two of the chasing teams that the promotion picture is changing. The leaders Marsh Lib lost at home for the first time this season going down to Greenhead Park in the closest aggregate scoreline of the day 92-91.

Second in the table Marsh United 'B' lost 3-4 away at Thongsbridge 'B' and that puts third-placed New Mill very much in the frame for a promotion push. They were without a match this week and are now just a point off the promotion places with two matches in hand over Marsh United 'B'.

Greenhead Park's win over the leaders will also send out warning signals to all the teams in that promotion race that they are very much in contention after a 5th consecutive win.

There are 6 teams separated by 6 points in the leader's slipstream and all will harbour hopes of being involved in the end-of-season shake-up. Wins this week for Primrose Hill Lib, Thongsbridge 'B', Meltham and Hemplow mean that the promotion race is only just beginning for some of the contenders.

A first Division 1 defeat in 7 matches for Golcar C&BC is a big setback to their title hopes as the top two both win and double their lead to 10 points. This may be one last hurrah for Shepley 'A' in the defence of their title by taking the heat out of a rival's chances but a 6-1 scoreline may mean that both teams are only to play bit parts for the remainder of the season.

A 6-1 home win for Marsh United 'A' over Thongsbridge 'A' coupled with Skel Windmill's 5-2 win at Lockwood Con sees the two promoted teams continuing to set the pace at the top. That defeat for Lockwood Con was one of four for the four bottom teams and it is clear that two of that foursome are destined for the drop, but which two?

Elland C&BC must be the favourites to go down as they have only had one win all season with the latest defeat being a 0-7 whitewash loss at Milnsbridge 'A'. Longwood aren't fairing much better after a 7th successive defeat this time 2-5 at home to Brockholes 'A' and Crosland Moor remain within their sights despite picking up three points from their trip to Netherton Con.

The two Lindley Lib teams in Division 2 conspired to damage the title hopes of Paddock I&C after the club's 'B' team beat them 5-2. Coupled with a 6-1 away win at Almondbury Lib for the club's 'A' team enables them to open up a 6-point gap to their main challengers for the second promotion place. Slaithwaite plough on regardless at the top after a 5-2 home win over Holmfirth 'A' made it 15 wins from 16 matches.

A surprise 1-6 home defeat for Golcar Lib by Milnsbridge 'B' condemns them to another season at this level and at the same time sends the bottom four into their own avoid-the-drop competition. Milnsbridge 'B' now have an eight-point gap between themselves and that bottom four who all lost ground this week with Linthwaite Hall being the only one of them to win this week. That 5-2 away win at Denby Dale coupled with Skel Windmill 'B' also losing at home 1-6 to Clayton West sees the two losers locked together on the same points total at the foot of the table.
