Top 2 Division 1 clash on Wednesday

Winter League

Preview of the Division 1 and Division 2 fixtures scheduled for Wednesday 30 November

A much anticipated Division 1 fixture hits the Wednesday schedule this week as the leaders, Thorpe Green 'A', take on reigning Champions, Lower Hopton, who are second and two points off top place. With very different individual records this season, Lower Hopton have four bowlers in the top 15 in the division's averages whilst Thorpe Green have only one.

But it is team scores that matter and Thorpe Green are still the only unbeaten team in the top division adding another edge to this match. With a host of teams lining up to contest top spot this season the interest and pressure is on the up. Meltham sit in 3rd place just 2 points behind Lower Hopton and play Clayton West this week.

Then a further 2-points back sit Lindley Lib 'A' who meet New Millers this Wednesday who have a real interest in matters at the top as they have a match in hand and are only 6-points behind the leaders. As that match in hand is against bottom-of-the-table Lindley BC 'A' they are handily placed to move well into contention.

The other fixture this week features the bottom two teams in the table at present, Lindley BC 'A' against Kirkheaton Cons, with both teams finishing in the top four last season it remains to be seen if they can recoup that form and this week's result will be an important sign to both teams of their chances of staying up.

There is also a bottom-two clash in Division 2 this week as Rastrick 'A' and Jackson Bridge meet with both teams looking for their first wins of the season. As both are already 14-points away from safety it is looking like it may be too late already for both teams but that wont stop them from striving to claim that first win.

Lindley BC 'B' retain the League's only 100% win record and have an 8-point lead at the top of the table and seem on course for a second successive promotion. If that should happen then they are likely to be swapping places with their 'A' team but first, they need to see off the challenges of a quartet of teams all with vested interests in the promotion battle. That includes Milnsbridge 'A' who they play this week and are very much alert to the possibility of a swift return to the top level for next season.

Two of that interested quartet go up against each other as 2nd placed Lockwood Con play 3rd placed Springwood 'A' with very contrasting recent records. After a hat-trick of initial wins, Lockwood Con have lost their last two matches whilst Springwood have only been beaten by the leaders Lindley BC 'B' this term. Lockwood Con have 3 of the top 5 bowlers in the division's averages whilst Springwood have only one in the top 12. That all counts for nothing as the teams are level on points with 2nd place for winners not even guaranteed so tight are things becoming behind the distant leaders.

Lowerhouses 'A' are very much in the promotion equation and after a period of grieving about losing their Division 1 status of last season appear to have become tuned in to their need to win matches to figure in a swift return to the top flight. Only the leaders have beaten them this season and with their next two fixtures being against bottom-three teams will fancy their chances of figuring prominently in the promotion stakes as the season moves towards the halfway point. This week they play Denby Dale who have won their last two matches after a slow start to their season so any result is possible.
