Title deciders go to final day

Veterans 6-Man League

Review of league fixtures played on 20 September

The destination of the 2021 titles for Sections A and B will go down to the final day of the season next Monday after all the contenders continued to display winning form as the tension mounts towards a great climax to the season. Different story in Section C where Slaithwaite continue to extend their lead at the top although they now know which team will be getting promoted along with them this year.

Mathematically four teams can still lift the Section A title as we move into the last week of the season but only one of those four played in the Monday fixture programme this week. The other three had their matches already rearranged for different reasons. The one team to play this Monday was Netherton Con and their 5-2 away win at Brockholes 'A' put them top one point ahead of Shepley 'A' who play their final 2 matches in the next 5 days. That win was a nervous affair with only 2 aggregate points (89-91) between the teams to enable the visitors to walk away with the majority of the spoils. Fourth-placed Milnsbridge may not win the title, although they still can, but they continue to have a key part to play in who does. Their Monday fixture away at Thongsbridge 'B' saw them win 5-2 which was a real setback to the home team's title hopes. Milnsbridge's final fixture is at home to Shepley 'A' who remain favourites for the title but still need to back that up with the points to claim it. A 6-1 away win for Lindley Lib over Longwood was key in the relegation battle as that lifted the Lindley side just above Longwood although level on points. Neither team is safe from the drop after Oakfield T&BC also won this time 5-2 at home against Crosland Moor. Oakfield and Paddock I&C continue to occupy the two relegation places but that can still change over the final week.

Although the Section B title race will go to the final day of the season both the top two teams got themselves promoted after this week's results. Honley Con edged ahead of Golcar C&BC by one point after they had a whitewash 7-0 home win over Meltham with Golcar C&BC dropping a point at home to Golcar Lib. That point for Golcar Lib was insufficient to stave off relegation as they have now completed their season and will drop a level along with Primrose Hill Lib. Primrose Hill Lib have finished in bottom place and their final match of the season will see current leaders Honley Con look to confirm their title hopes next Monday. A 7-0 win for the leaders will confirm that status with Golcar C&BC also away from home to Skel Windmill 'A' relying on Honley Con slipping up to provide an opening for them to use to their advantage.

The title battle in Section C has long been decided and Slaithwaite continued with their winning habit with a 7-0 home win over Holmfirth 'B' to make it 14 wins from 15 matches this season. Holmfirth 'A' collected the two points they needed to secure the second promotion spot with a 6-1 home win over Thongsbridge 'A'. On a day when all four matches in the Section went the way of the home sides there were also wins for Hemplow and Marsh Lib as both teams completed their home fixture programmes in confident style.
