Thorpe Green lose first game of season

Winter League

Review of the Division 1 & 2 fixtures played on Wednesday 29 November

Both of Wednesday's venues had some frost on them. At Milnsbridge there was one full side length of two-metres depth, equating to about 10% of the green but it was much more widespread at Springwood where about 50% of the green had some frost impact. The shaded areas were affected whereas the areas where the sun got through were fine. However both greens declared play possible and a full fixture programme for Divisions 1 and 2 was completed without mishap.

Lindley BC A were promoted to Division 1 at the end of last season and started the new campaign with a big win over the 2022-23 Champions, Lower Hopton. Their last 3 matches have been against the top 3 teams in the table peaking with a match on Wednesday against the current leaders Thorpe Green where they acquited themselves admirably to run up a 6-2 victory. With an upcoming set of fixtures against lower-placed opponents they can expect to consolidate their position further and possibly launch their own bid for honours.

That first defeat of the season left Thorpe Green hanging on to top spot by a better Aggregate For score than New Mill A who won their match against third-placed Clayton West 6-2. That sets up the Thorpe Green v New Mill A fixture for next Wednesday as a real key moment in the title race.

Lower Hopton continue their return to form with another 8-0 win this time against Lowerhouses A to put themselves 10-points behind the leaders but with a match in hand over them. Golcar Lib lifted themselves off the foot of the table and out of the relegation places after a 6-2 win over Meltham who dropped into the bottom spot as a result. Kirkheaton Con A were without a match this week but find themselves occupying the second relegation place at present.

In Division 2 there were three 8-0 winners but Cowcliffe A, the leaders, were not one of them. However, they still continue to set the pace at the top of the table after a 6-2 win over Lockwood Con A this Wednesday. There was 8-0 whitewash wins for their two main challengers as Lindley BC B beat Huddersfield Recreation Club and Milnsbridge overwhelmed Brockholes A. Denby Dale continued their climb up the table with another 8-0 scoreline as they saw off Springwood A.
