Sub-Team KO Semi-Final Preview

Veterans 10-Man League

Sub-Team KO

This Thursday sees the two Semi-Finals of the Sub-Team Knock-Out being played with two very different matches likely. This is the competition for teams outside the top 32 teams from the league tables from the end of the previous season so is made up of all the Section 4 and 5 teams plus 8 from Section 3.

Lowerhouses (+25) v Springwood (+25) at Netherton Con

Level on handicap these two Section 3 teams are having very different seasons with Lowerhouses currently leading the table with 11 wins from their 15 games to date. This being their first season at this level having been promoted at the end of the 2019 season as Section 4 Champions. Whereas Springwood sit in the lower half of the table and had a bad experience when the two teams met earlier in the season recording their lowest aggregate total (77) of the season when going down 8-1 on the Lowerhouses green. Neither team is in the best of form with Lowerhouses losing 2 of their last 3 fixtures, one of those to relegation-threatened Brockholes 'B' whilst Springwood have only won 2 of their last 6 games although the latest was a 8-1 demolition of that same Brockholes 'B' team. Looking back at the history of this competiton reveals that Lowerhouses were the winners in the 2nd year of the competition's existence (1985) whilst Springwood have never won this or any League KO competition.

Huddersfield Recreation Club (+30) v Greenhead Park (+45) at Marsh United

It is good to see a Section 5 team, Greenhead Park, playing for a place in the Final but they will have it all on to overcome Section 4 leaders Huddersfield Recreation Club with just a 15-point handicap advantage for protection. They are certainly there on merit having disposed of Section 3 high-fliers, Golcar Lib 'B', and Section 5 leaders, Huddersfield RUBC, in the last two rounds to reach the penultimate hurdle. However, they face a Recreation Club side in their best form of the season with 7 straight league wins behind them and almost assured of at least promotion this year. Greenhead Park are one of the original founding clubs of the Veterans League and the first-ever winners of the top tier title so have a proud history in the League but have never won this particular competition. That is something that the Recreation Club have achieved once, in 2001, under their previous name of Zeneca.
