Slaithwaite win the Juller Fuller Trophy

Slaithwaite justified their 'favourites' tag when lifting the Julie Fuller Trophy for the first time with a 78-54 win over Section B side Marsh United at Kirkheaton C&BC yesterday. Winning two of the three pairs games to run out convincing winners.

The sky may have been cloudy but it was only blue skies for the team enjoying their first year in this competition and first season in the 6-Man League. Well on their way to a League and KO double as they continue to top the Section C table with a 15-point lead with 4 games to play. They are clearly in the wrong Section, through no fault of theirs, which will be rectified by their promotion this year and the 18-point handicap was always generous but never needed in any of their matches including the final. Congratulations to Slaithwaite and commiserations to a gallant Marsh United team who faced a strong outfit with gritted determination although that wasn't enough on the day.

The Julie Fuller Trophy is a knock-out competition for all the teams in the Veterans 6-Man League and is usually a 3-Pairs straight knock-out competition with the aggregate scores determining the winners. However, in this post-pandemic year, it was decided to extend the competition to provide more game time for bowlers by holding it over two phases. Phase one consisted of a league phase with all teams playing 4 matches against different opponents with the top 4 teams then going through to the semi-final knock-out phase with the two teams that topped the league phase eventually meeting in the Final.
