Shepley relinquish 6-man title

Veterans League

Review of the Veterans 6-Man League results from matches played on Monday 31 July

Shepley's last hope of winning a third successive Division 1 title in the 6-Man League looks to have faded after they failed to overturn the current leaders. They are now in fourth place, 16 points behind Marsh United 'A' who beat them 5-2 this week and surely their hold on the title has now slipped away. That doesn't mean that Marsh United can amble towards the title as the other teams around them also won.

Golcar C&BC may pose the biggest threat to those title aspirations and a 7-0 away win at Lockwood Con did nothing to dispell that thinking. Although Skel Windmill 'A' have played a game more than the other teams in the title race they do keep winning and an eighth successive win, this time by 6-1 away at Longwood, keeps them well in contention.

Elland C&BC are getting closer to a first win of the season and a second away 3-4 reversal this time at Netherton Con shows how near they are to claiming a first ever win in the 6-Man League. The three teams above them, Longwood, Crosland Moor and Lockwood Con, all lost home matches this week and it isn't beyond the possibility that a first win could lead to an upsurge in points gained and a chance of avoiding relegation.

A shock 1-6 home defeat for second in the Division 2 table Lindley Lib 'A' by mid-table Clayton West puts them 11 points behind Slaithwaite who had a 5-2 home win over Milnsbridge 'B'. That sees them extend their lead at the top to 11 points. Things become more congested in the battle for the second promotion place with only 5 points between the next four teams with Paddock I&C's 6-1 away win at Denby Dale keeping them well in touch. A surprise 5-2 away win for Lindley Lib 'B' over Golcar Lib puts the two teams level on points with both teams hopeful of a say in the promotion push.

At the foot of the table three teams remain involved in the relegation fight and two of those teams met this Monday. The outcome was a 5-2 away win for Linthwaite Hall over Skel Windmill 'B' but it is Denby Dale who sit bottom after a 1-6 home loss to Paddock I&C. Almondbury Lib and Holmfirth 'A' had an aggregate score draw of 74-74 but as you know there are no drawn matches in the Veterans League and the points went to the home team, Almondbury Lib, 4-3.

A predictable set of results in the Monday Division 3 programme with the top four teams all having comfortable wins so no change in the pecking order there. The pick of those results being a 7-0 away win for the leaders Marsh Lib at Holmfirth 'B' which stretched their lead over New Mill, winning for the 4th time on the bounce, at Shepley 'B' by 6-1. Thongsbridge 'B' had a 5-2 home win over Primrose Hill Lib whilst Greenhead Park and Marsh United 'B' both had good 6-1 away wins at Brockholes 'B' and Hemplow respectively. Thongsbridge 'C' have Meltham as their Friday fixture guests and a win for the home side should take them above their visitors in the table.
