Serious competition in Div.1

Mirfield League

It is getting serious now at the top of Division 1 of the Mirfield League as the top four teams play each other this coming Tuesday with the increasing move towards a split between the top three and the rest of the teams in real danger of becoming permanent and wider.

Current leaders and reigning Champions Thongsbridge 'A' travel to third-placed Lower Hopton 'A' with the hosts desperate to close the 7 point gap between the teams. Pudsey 'A' are a little closer to the leaders with a 5 point gap in place and they are poised to take advantage of any slipups from the leaders when they host 4th-placed Littlemoor 'A'. This looks like it may be the final opportunity for Littlemoor to attach themselves to the top group rather than be consumed by the chasing pack so they will be particularly keen to do well.

Ossett Flying Horse 'A' would love to be a member of that chasing pack for presently they are 10 points behind the last member of that group and look really lonely in bottom place. A trip to play the 2nd from bottom Crosland Moor may be their last chance for a while to make a difference to their season.

It is a top-of-the-table clash at Kirkheaton Con 'A' where the Division 2 leaders host 2nd placed Woodlands Park with a 3-point gap and an unbeaten record for the leaders at stake. The next two in the table both have away matches this week when Alverthorpe 'A' go to Spen Victoria 'A' who haven't won any of their last 3 matches and then Pudsey 'B' are at lowly Whitkirk who will be especially keen to bounce back from last week's 0-12 whitewash defeat at Woodlands Park.

It is another top-2 confrontation in Division 3 where the leaders Ossett C&AC go to play Littlemoor 'B' with both teams on 35 points although the leaders have a game in hand so Littlemoor will be eager to address that situation. Third-placed Dodworth are just 2 points off the pace and will expect to maximise the benefit from their home game against bottom-of-the-table Horbury and pass at least one of the two leaders this week. Milnsbridge 'B' are still looking for their first win of the season and will look to take something from their match at Cleckheaton Sports 'A' to keep them in touch with the teams above them which is already a 12-point catch-up.

The match of interest in Division 4 is between Lowerhouses (3rd) and Kirkheaton Con 'B' (4th) who have both played a game less than the top two teams and any aspirations of joining in the promotion push will be tested this week. Second-placed Broad Oak 'A' will be looking for redemption after last week's 1-11 hammering at Thornhill C&BC which catapulted the winners to topspot and may find that when they have a visit from bottom-of-the-table Spen Victoria 'B'. Leaders Thornhill will hope to claim their first away win of the season when they travel to Farsley who have lost their last two matches (both away from home) after a promising start to the season.

Morton House with 5 wins from 5 matches head the Division 5 table but they have been unable to shake off the attention of Heckmondwike who are also unbeaten and 4 points behind them. That may change this week as Heckmondwike have to go to third-placed Alverthorpe 'B' whilst the leaders have an easier looking encounter at home to The Harold Club who have lost their previous two away games heavily. The bottom two teams both have home games this week and both could reduce the gap between themselves and safety if they can cash in on these fixtures. Marsh United will especially need to perform to stop third from bottom Almondbury Lib widening the gap away from the relegation places.

A big opportunity presents itself for Division 6 leaders Netherton Con as they have a home game against lowly Almondbury BC with their two nearest challengers both playing away. Only 2 points separate the top three teams so things remain tight and such opportunities need to be grasped if the quest for honours is to be maintained.

Almost an identical situation in Division 7 as Royds Park, the leaders, have a very winnable home game against lowly Cleckheaton Sports 'C' with their two prime challengers, Shepley and Springwood 'B' both on the road this week at Dalton and Thorpe Green 'B' respectively.
