The two Yorkshire teams through to Finals Day of the BCGBA World Club Championships contested the final with Pudsey beating Lower Hopton by just 6 points after an epic day of bowling. On a long day with the two finalists having to play three matches to determine the destination of the prestigious trophy on a warm Easter Sunday in mid-April.
The two Mirfield League rivals went head to head in the Final after both impressed in qualifying for the ultimate test. Lower Hopton were really buzzing after two big wins, the one over the Warwick & Worcester representatives from the George Warley club being by a massive 101 points (168-67). Another Mirfield League club, Dearne Sports representing South Yorkshire, made it to the semi-finals but met Lower Hopton on a mission to reach the Final and eventually succumbed 118-152.
In the other half of the draw, Pudsey beat the Potteries representatives from Lightwood by 159-121 in the quarter-finals and then eliminated the Welsh team from Llay Welfare again by a big margin of 162-114.
The final was always a tight affair with Pudsey collecting 5 of the 8 games to beat their perpetual rivals by 142-136 to exact some revenge for being beaten to the Mirfield League title last year. It speaks volumes for the quality of the Mirfield League that three of their teams were involved in the semi-finals of such a huge competition and then having both finalists just added to the message about the standard of bowling in Yorkshire.
