Normal service resumed for Lockwood Con

Veterans League

Review of Tuesday's opening day results in Divisions 1 & 2 of the Veterans League

Lockwood Con 'A' have led the Division 1 table so often over the last 8 years that it is no surprise to see them there after the opening round of league fixtures last Tuesday. An 8-1 home win over Meltham 'A' sends out a signal to the other contenders that the Con intend being in the title mix once again this year.

However Champions Golcar Lib 'A' have a different message to send out and a 7-2 away win at Waterloo is a step up from last year's 3-6 defeat at the same venue. Last season's runners-up, Kirkheaton Con, are satisfied with a close defeat at Longwood which realised them four points to start their season.

The two newly promoted teams had rude awakenings after the step up in standards as both suffered opening-day defeats. Milnsbridge 'A' going down 4-5 at home to Clayton West and Lowerhouse's return to the top flight after a 40-year absence saw them go down 2-7 at Cowcliffe. Elland C&BC 'A' won their derby encounter with Rastrick by 6-3 to complete the day 1 fixture programme.

In Division 2 the two Lindley teams dropping down from Division 1 put down a marker as to their claim for a swift return to the top level after both clocked up good opening-day wins. Lindley BC 'A' started with an 8-1 home win over Thorpe Green and that was good enough to send them clear in the first table published this season. Lindley Lib 'A' had a good away win at Holmfirth 'A' by 6-3. Last year there were two divisions between the teams and this welcome to a higher level for Holmfirth will give them an indication of what is in store for them this season.

Sandwiched between the two Lindley teams at the top of the table are Thongsbridge 'A' after beating New Mill 'A' 7-2 whilst Linthwaite Hall, promoted as Division 3 Champions, opened with a 5-4 home win but pushed all the way by Shepley. Bradley & Colne and Broad Oak 'A' are both teams with traditionally strong home form and that is how it played out when they met on Tuesday with Bradley & Colne running out 6-3 winners on their own green.

There is a full fixture programme next Tuesday when the teams in Divisions 3, 4 and 5 will start their seasons.
