Winter League
We are delighted to announce that the League has received a very generous gift of a new trophy to be competed for annually and to be awarded to the top individual bowler in a new League Knock-Out competition.
The gift of the trophy comes from Kirkheaton Con bowlers Garry Senior and Tony Butterfield and they have named it The Winter Cup. The likely format of the competition is that each of the three divisions will hold their own one-day KO Qualifying competition. So all Division 3 bowlers entering the competition will have a straight KO competition at Thorpe Green; Division 2 at Springwood and Division 1 at Milnsbridge.
The format of the competition has still to be finalised but could see top 2 bowlers from each of the Qualifying Rounds will progress to Finals Day where the 6 qualifiers will be drawn in competition against each other with the eventual winner lifting The Winter Cup. Alternatively, the top 6 qualifiers could be joined by the top two scoring losing bowlers to make 8 bowlers going into Finals Day.
The Finals Day will be played on one of our three greens and the intent is that the Finals Day will be rotated around our greens each year in the future. Bowlers reaching Finals Day will be handicapped based on the Division they have bowled in.
Bowlers will be charged a £3.00 entry fee of which £2.50 will go to the host club and 50p towards the cost of providing an engraved memento to be retained by the winner. Bowlers must have planned a minimum number of League games to qualify to enter the competition. That minimum number has still to be set but will be a sensibly low number to open up entry to as many bowlers as possible.
It is too late to include the competition in this season's fixture programme but we are keen to kick-start the competition this season so have agreed with our sponsors and host clubs to run the competition in early April. We crave to be different in everything we do and running a Winter League KO competition in April just adds to that difference. This is seen as a one-off arrangement this season with the intent to include it in our normal League calendar from the 2022-23 season.
More details later in the season but we do hope that bowlers will support this new competition and welcome the generosity of our two sponsors.
