New name on Winter Cup this year

Winter League

There will be a new name on the 2024 Winter Cup after the two previous winners of the title went out of the competition in Wednesday's Division 1 qualifying round.

Reigning Champion, Ian Briggs of Thorpe Green A, went down 19-21 to Clayton West's Tim Poulter who only lasted another round before going down 13-21 to Tony Lockwood who then went down 11-21 to Tony Butterfield who was one of the four qualifiers. As one half of the Kirkheaton Cons duo who donated the Winter Cup trophy to the League, it would be an ironic setting if Tony should progress even further.

Tony is joined in the bunch of four qualifiers with teammate Adrian 'Crafty' Cooper, Dave Sykes of Lowerhouses and Andy Wyke of Thorpe Green A who beat the only other previous winner of this title, Lindley BC A captain Steve Haigh. So a new name will appear on the trophy this year and the four Division 1 qualifiers will be among the favourites to lift the title . The Round of the Last 24 will be played at Lindley Lib on Wednesday 10 April at 1.00pm followed by the Finals Day on Sunday 14 April.
