Netherton Con lift the Julie Fuller Trophy

Veterans League

Netherton Cons are the 2023 Julie Fuller Trophy winners after seeing off a staunch fight back from their Thongsbridge opponents. A final 61-56 aggregate scoreline doesn't tell half of the story with a 5-points difference coming about as the Thongsbridge team ran out of time in recovering from a poor start in all three pairs matches.

After 12 ends in each match the Netherton team held a 20-points lead (38-18) and seemed set for a stroll in the Golcar Lib sunshine. But they hadn't reckoned with the fighting spirit of the Thongsbridge team which had helped them to sit two places above the Netherton team in the Division 1 league table.

However it was Netherton Cons that built on that fine start and lifted the trophy at the end of the day for a second success in this competition, the first time being in 2006. Whilst Thongsbridge will have to wait at least another 12 months before trying to claim a first success.

The Julie Fuller Trophy competition was introduced in 2001 and only the Covid year of 2020 has been missed since. However the original sponsor has now ceased her sponsorship and Frank Greenwood has taken over that support this season and insisted that the competition continues to be played under its original name.
