Memories: When crown green met Irish short mat

Bowling Memories

This report from Peter Muff in The Examiner tells the story of top Huddersfield crown green bowlers competing in an Irish short-mat competition for £3,000 prize money in February 1984. Among the all-star line-up was World Outdoor Singles Champion, the pipe-smoking David Bryant with a host of crown green, short mat and Irish bowlers were all taking part in the competition at Stockport with Boby Charlton lined up to present the prizes. Peter Muff takes up the story which unfortunately doesn't end with a report on the outcome of the competition. Maybe one of our veteran bowlers can recall any further details about it although I am sure that if a Huddersfield crown green bowler had won it then there would certainly have been a record of it available to all.
