Winter League A review of the Division 1 matches played on Wednesday 12 January at Milnsbridge BC
After working their way through a bad patch that failed to produce a win in four consecutive fixtures the New Millers have stormed back on to the scene with two 8-0 wins in January to reignite their bid for Division 1 honours. The latest team on the end of the Miller's backlash being bottom of the table Rastrick 'A' who only managed a total of 12 points from the 3 games. That wasn't the lowest total ever recorded in the history of the Winter League but only a 6-63 defeat for Division 3 team Huddersfield Recreation Club 'B' last October, ironically against the Rastrick 'B' side, has been heavier.
That win pushed the Millers up a place in the table to fourth spot passing Lindley BC 'A' who suffered a 2-6 reversal at the hands of Lower Hopton. Both games against the league leaders have seen the Lindley outfit takes points off them, the only team to do that in both games so far but that wasn't enough to stop them dropping to fifth place in the table.
That 6-2 win for the leaders was matched by second-placed Kirkheaton Con against a fighting Milnsbridge 'A' side who desperately need the points in their battle to avoid the drop. It increasingly looks like either they or Lowerhouses 'A' will accompany Rastrick 'A' through the relegation trapdoor with just 2 points between them now. It is all building up into a tight finish which may not be resolved when the two battlers play each other next week.
Milnsbridge will look back on their latest match as a missed opportunity to inch nearer to safety as after a singles win apiece the outcome was to be decided by the pairs game. Milnsbridge looked to be cruising to a win which would have given them a 6-2 win when leading 17-7 but only scored two more points to go down 19-21.
Not dissimilar in the Lowerhouses 'A' match with a single win each against Clayton West but the pairs game proved to be 'nick and tuck' until a late sprint from the West couple sealed the destiny of the points at 21-15.
