Winter League
Thursday's meeting of the Winter League's Management Committee discussed a number of matters including a proposal to introduce a new Winter Friday League. This was brought to the meeting by Thorpe Green bowler Ian Briggs to outline a proposal seeking the support of the League to take it further.
Ian's emphasis was to build on the success of the Winter League by introducing another day of bowling for those bowlers that wanted to play in a second match each week during the winter months. His outline also touched on the format which again would be four-person teams of mixed gender and for the over-60's. One change that he was very keen on was to see the first half of the season where the teams would play as four singles then change at that stage to become a competition of two pairs for the rest of the campaign.
Members of the Committee had a number of questions for Ian which he answered but there were a number of reservations they had about expanding the League at this time. Whilst there was some interest and support for the proposal the timing wasn't considered to be quite right yet. However Ian was encouraged to do some further work in developing his idea and drum up support for it in particular by
canvassing teams to see how many would enter a new league
extending the current understanding of teams outside of Division 1 teams
investigate which clubs would be prepared to host a Friday League
develop further the financial aspects of the proposal
The Committee would welcome learning how each of these streams would develop and Ian was encouraged to come back to the Committee with an update when he felt he had a stronger hold on the potential and level of support and interest from other teams.
If any one is interested in hearing more about such a move to extend the bowling week then please get in touch and I will pass your interest, questions, thoughts and ideas on to Ian.
Primrose hill would be happy to be one of the greens on a Friday for an open age league....four singles was mooted.....if the winter league don't want it to be under their umbrella as such ..we could run it as a separate league as speaking at Hove edge on Tues/Thurs there's loads of interest...in fact we think we've 8 teams already
