Leaders under pressure again

Veterans League

It is so tight at the top of Division 1 that, when the leaders have a bye-week, they risk dropping three places down the table. That is what happened this week to Lockwood Con who finished the first half of the season, last week, two points clear at the top. Seven days later they are down to fourth place, five points behind Golcar Lib 'A' who had a 7-2 home win over Longwood.

But they have also been passed by Elland C&BC 'A' who climbed 4 places from 6th to 2nd after a 7-2 home win over Waterloo, and Rastrick who won away at Lindley Lib 'A' by 7-2 to also go up 4 places to 3rd. The only losing team in the top half of the table was Kirkheaton Con 'A' who went down 3-6 at Meltham. Cowcliffe scraped past Lindley BC 'A' 5-4 with a 122-120 aggregate difference underpinning that and Clayton West ended a run of four straight defeats when winning 6-3 at home to Marsh United 'A'.

Division 2 leaders Milnsbridge 'A' had a surprise 4-5 defeat away at New Mill 'A' but retain top spot although the gap has been reduced to 2 points from the 5-point difference there was at the start of the week. Almondbury BC 'A' continue to be the biggest threat to the leaders and their 7-2 away win at Thorpe Green enabled them to open up a 5-point promotion lead over Lowerhouses and Bradley & Colne. Lowerhouses had a 9-0 home win over Slaithwaite to swap 5th and 3rd places with Netherton Con 'A' who went down 3-6 away at Hemplow 'A'.

That defeat for Thorpe Green sees them dropping into the relegation place vacated by Lockwood Con 'B' despite their 3-6 away loss at Broad Oak 'A'. Slaithwaite seem to be in reverse gear at present after a sixth defeat in their last seven matches and this was the heaviest of them all, 0-9 at Lowerhouses. Another defeat for Brockholes 'A' this time 2-7 at Shepley left them further adrift at the foot of the table with the interest mounting in which team will accompany them through the relegation trapdoor. One win in the last six fixtures for Thorpe Green has seriously damaged their chances along with Slaithwaite, one win in seven, whilst Lockwood Con 'B' seem to have hit some form winning 3 of their last 5 matches and claiming 3 points from each of the two matches they lost which has been rewarded with their first step out of the relegation places all season.
