September 2000: Huddersfield Ladies Merit Final
Just 7 days after helping her team land the Sanderson Cup, Lockwood Cons bowler Bridie Buckley went on to claim the prestigious Ladies Merit title played at Lockwood Park. Taking the title by beating Iris Gwynne in the final 21-16 although it was anything but a comfortable win. After storming into a 13-4 lead Bridie was pegged back to 20-16 and laying two more down which would have taken the lead to 20-18 with one wood still to play. That proved to be the wood of the final and took the chance away from her Almondbury Con opponent.
The winner also had a big scare in the quarter-finals when trailing 6-16 to Meltham bowler Barbara Helyar before turning things around and running out a 21-18 winner. Both finalists faced County bowlers in the semi-finals and both ran out convincing 21-8 victors to set up a closely contested final.
Another Ladies All Our Yesterdays memory tomorrow as we go back to 1983 to Finals Day of the Valley Hire Centre Handicap held at a very wet Linthwaite Hall.
