This Friday it is Finals Day in the Julie Fuller Trophy and the Over-80's KO both to be played on the same green with the Over-80's KO Semi-Finals starting things off at Hemplow. Once the Semi-Finals have been completed then the three pairs from Clayton West and Lockwood Con will take to the green to determine the 2022 Julie Fuller Trophy winner. Then the Final of the Over-80s will then be played to end the traditional dual final programme.
The Over-80's Semi-Finals Gordon Walker (Kirkheaton Con) +3 v Roy Sutton (Slaithwaite) +3 Frank Greenwood (Golcar Lib) +1 v Mike Wood (Brockholes) +4
The Over-80's KO was the only individual bowler competition held last year because of the pandemic restrictions reducing the season time frame. Frank Greenwood beat Gordon Walker to win the trophy then and with both bowlers once again in the semi-finals and in separate halves of the draw, a repeat is still on the cards although Roy Sutton and Mike Wood may have something to say about that!
I played a Works League match on Thursday evening last week at Hemplow, the same venue as for these two finals. It was a warm August evening with plenty of sun around so we were a little surprised to see our opponents coming out of the clubhouse in jacket, hats and gloves. The match started and then the sun went down allowing millions of midges to take to the skies and hinder every end that we tried to play.
Our visiting team members quickly ran to retrieve all-weather gear from our cars before heading back to the green. I don't think this should be an issue for the bowlers in either of these finals unless they are still on the green when the sun goes down. Let's hope not anyhow.
