Bowling News

The BCGBA competition for the Jack & Jean Isherwood Championship will be contested this year following a two-year Covid-enforced absence. The competition is open for all bowlers over 60 years old, male or female. The eventual winner will then qualify for the national Champion-of-Champions competition.

The Yorkshire Qualifying Round will be played at Kirkheaton C&BC on Friday 17 June with a 10.30am start time. There is an entry fee of £5 and you should enter by emailing or contacting Mark Waite on either dmawaite@sky.com or 07873 267116 no later than 4 June. The draw will be done on the day.

Two Yorkshire qualifiers will go through to the national Finals Day when 32 will play out to a conclusion on Wednesday 20 July at Prees Bowling Club in Shropshire.

Huddersfield bowlers have had some success in this competition since its conception in 1991 with Roy Sutton (2002) of Meltham and Frank Griffin (2008) of Waterloo both past winners of the title.

I think you'll find this competition was played last year at Prees and the state of the greens left a lot to be desired, but it's the sponsors home green. The comp was won by Keith Pessall

Why the winter league only open to over 60,s ?????? I've been bowling in the winter for years in leagues...as usual Huddersfield in the slow up take but at least eventually they get a winter league but oh no there so out of touch they put limits on who can bowl in it... The catchment of new bowlers should be coming from people just given up cricket, football etc ....times have changed where they have mon-fri jobs......Halifax BC,,, Hove edge and as far as I'm aware salts BC are open to any sex any age.....come on Huddersfield for once get with the times ......

However, that failed to materialise for well-documented reasons. Now that the League has become well established it means that any changes to the rules have to be approved by the member teams and in an act of self-survival may resist such a change. However, I may be doing them a mis-service. I feel a survey coming on to see if there is any support for such a change. Thanks for raising the issue and…
