Inter-District scare before title win

Veterans League

A big scare for the Huddersfield Veterans Inter-District team before finally claiming the Yorkshire top team title for a second consecutive season. Going into the final day's set of fixtures at the top of the league table and keen to retain the title they claimed in 2019. Things didn't look too good at the half-way stage of their final match of the season after losing three of the first four singles matches at both the home and away legs of their matches against the Halifax representative team yesterday.

The depleted 2021 competition had lost 3 teams due to COVID-19 concerns but there were plenty of close contests none more so than on the final day of the competition. It took second-half fightbacks for the Huddersfield teams at both the Thongsbridge home venue and the Mytholmroyd away green for each match to see the game score evened out at 4-4. The complex scoring system then awarded the Huddersfield home team a 16-12 win with the away side going down 13-15 for an overall 29-27 win and the title with an 11 point lead over Bradford who beat Skipton 40-26 on the final day.

Final day wins at Thongsbridge for Mick Cox, Peter Kain, Andy Carter and Barry Gibson with the four away team winners being Malcolm Gilbert, Peter Hopkinson, Tim Poulter and Robert Senior.

Congratulations to all the representative team members for retaining the title that they won in 2019 before the barren 2020 COVID affected season. That win is added to the one-day KO Hickson Trophy that the team won last month.
