Inter-District League tension mounts

Veterans League

The Huddersfield Inter-District team continues its quest to win the Yorkshire Inter-District Veterans League with the 4th match of the seven-match season when taking on Wakefield this Friday.

Our representative team will be looking for a big win this week against a team that has lost all three of their matches this season. The home team will meet their Wakefield counterparts at Marsh United after playing their first three fixtures on the Thongsbridge green. The rules only allow a maximum of four fixtures to be played on the same green so it looks like the final match on that green may be saved for the later visit of the Leeds team which currently heads the league table.

This Friday's away leg sees the Huddersfield team travelling to Outwood to play the Wakefield team and both home and away legs start at 1.00pm. The away team has a squad of eleven bowlers which is D Booth, J Burnett, T Butterfield, M Gilbert (C), Edwin Haigh, D Hewitt, P Hopkinson, D Pollard, T Poulter, G Senior, R Stopford. Manager: Alan Sharpe.

The Home team playing at Marsh United is: A Bamforth, J Bloomer, R Dickinson, Eddie Haigh, S Haigh, G Sigsworth, R Whitwam, A Wike. Reserves: B Gibson and P Kain. Non playing Captain F. Greenwood. Manager David Armitage.

The match of real interest this week is the meeting of the two teams either side of our 2nd place team when the leaders, Leeds, take on the reigning Champions, West Riding. Both teams remain unbeaten whilst the West Riding team has not reached the level of performance of last year but still remain a very potent force.

The surprise package this year has been the Leeds team. After a delayed post-Covid restart to their Inter-District League involvement they have passed all previous records. Previously they have featured very much among the also-rans but have totally turned that expectation on it's head with the only 100% win record in the League this season. A team needs to start taking points off the leaders soon if they are to be denied an unexpected title success. The Huddersfield team must look towards another big win to maintain the momentum to stay firmly in contention for the 2023 title.
