Veterans League
The Huddersfield Veterans Inter-District team were overwhelmed in their top-of-the-table clash against their West Riding counterparts to suffer their heaviest defeat for some years going down 14-42. The fact that the Huddersfield side has a match in hand will be of little comfort with a 49-point difference to recover in their two remaining matches. In fact it could get worse as Halifax and Bradford close in on staking claims to the runners-up position and they are the two remaining opponents for our representative side.
With 56 points available in every match played, it is still mathematically possible to overhaul the leaders but with the West Riding's remaining fixture being against a Skipton side that has one win in four and the Huddersfield team to play their two nearest challengers then it may be prudent to lower the sights to hanging on to second place as being the best outcome.
The Huddersfield home leg switch of venue to the Rugby Club backfired with an unheard-of home defeat of 10-18. This was not helped by the home team's top bowler being left out of the team for some unknown reason. Mick Cox was named as a reserve for this biggest match of the season when he remains top of the Huddersfield averages and unbeaten this season in this competition.
The away side managed two winners both by the 21-20 scoreline to add 4 points to the overall total in the competition's complex scoring system. This was a major setback to the team's defence of the title they reclaimed last year and the difference in the scores makes for sorry reading and so out of character for the team that has performed so well in this competition over many years.
