Despite the recent snow the summer bowling season is almost upon us and many bowlers are keen to get some practice in before the season really starts. So when does your club green become available to club members? We offered to publicise reopening dates for any local bowling club and Milnsbridge BC were first out of the blocks to indicate that Saturday 1 April is their date to reopen for the 2023 summer season.
There was also a footnote from Milnsbridge to explain that the green maintenance programme is still ongoing after being in use weekly throughout the Winter League season. Most of it has been completed but there is still some overseeding and a number of other small jobs. However expectations are that the green will open to members on Saturday 1 April. The report also indicates an increase in membership with the two Veterans League teams especially being well supported. There is a squad of 15 for the A team and 17 for the B team. In addition, the two 6-Man League teams are also well provided for on the numbers front.
Greenhead Park tell me that their green is already open and they held their first practice session last week in preparation for the new season. However, Richard Pearcey, the club's Veterans League captain adds .... We had our first practice session on Tuesday but the green was in as worse a condition as I have ever seen it. Being Council owned we are in their hands regarding maintenance and upkeep, Considering the development group propose to use the green to promote bowling this season, it will need a lot of attention to make it a suitable playing surface.
Lets hope someone from the Council sees this and can arrange for some support.
Kirkheaton Con are holding a Members & Guest competition on Saturday 25 March and the green will be open from then on for all members.
The Weston Park Charity KO signals the opening of the Brockholes green with the two qualifying rounds on Saturday 25 and Saturday 26. The green is open from the day before on Friday 24 March.
