The Huddersfield Veterans Inter-District teams made a bright start to their 2026 season by thrashing Castleford by 45-11. The nucleus of that scoreline came in the home leg where all eight team members won their matches to provide a 26-2 start. That was followed by the away team avenging last year's 7-21 defeat with a 19-9 away win with 5 of the team winning their matches.
With no opening day fixture the Huddersfield team are one fixture behind the other teams. They started the catch-up work in fine style with a resounding win over the perpetual bottom-of-the-table opponents. Keeping things in perspective we note that Castleford haven't won an Inter-District match since 1 September 2023 when they beat Wakefield 32-24. There are clearly bigger challenges ahead which will provide a guide to the potential of this team.
That will start in the next round of fixtures when the Huddersfield teams are paired up with their Skipton counterparts. Last year the Skipton team finished four points and one place behind our team. When the two teams clashed, the Huddersfield side came out on top 39-17. More of the same please.
However you can only beat the opposition put in front of you and that is exactly what they did. The win wasn't a surprise but the 26-2 home score will have lifted a few eyebrows. Surprisingly a 26-2 scoreline isn't the biggest of the new season as the West Riding home team overwhelmed the Wakefield visiting team 27-1 on the opening day of the season and with the addition of their A team's contribution, ended up with a 49-7 scoreline.
Meanwhile the West Riding team heads the table after an impressive start to the season especially in Friday's match against the Leeds team, the reigning Yorkshire Champions. A 33-23 win for last year's runners-up has raised the bar to a level that all teams will be trying to emulate.
