Getting tense at the top

Veterans 10-Man League

Preview of matches to be played on Tuesday 31 August

The leaders in the top two sections will be interested observers of matches between the 2nd and 3rd in each section in the hope that they damage each other's chances of closing the gaps. In Section 1 second-placed Elland C&BC 'A' have to travel to play Waterloo who sit third with an enviable 9-1 home record with a 9-point gap between the two teams. Lockwood Con 'A' are at home to Marsh United 'A' and will be hoping to extend their 4-points lead over Elland with a little help from Waterloo. Four of the five bottom teams have home games this coming week with Crosland Moor being the odd ones out. They have to go to Lindley Lib 'A' who are just above them in the table but have the cushion of 8 points between the teams and a chance to shake off relegation talk for the foreseeable future.

The top four teams in Section 2 play each other this week with again the 2nd and 3rd placed teams in direct opposition as Lindley BC 'A' go to New Mill 'A' as two teams in form clash. Second-placed Lindley BC 'A' have won their last 3 matches but that is bettered by New Mill who have 9 straight wins on the bounce and have only lost once at home all season (to Hemplow 'A'). The leaders, Kirkheaton Con 'A' are at home to Broad Oak 'A' who have gone off the boil recently losing 4 of their last 7 league matches. The bottom two teams, Paddock I&C and Kirkheaton C&BC 'A' continue to look stranded and the two teams immediately above them, Lockwood Con 'B' and Brockholes 'A', play each other this Tuesday with the winner looking likely to move into calmer waters.

Things are very tight at the top of Section 3 as just 6 points separate the top four teams and three of those four have away games this week. The exception being Golcar Lib 'B' who welcome bottom-two team Outlane to their green when a big win could elevate them into a promotion spot. The relegation fight seems to be any 2 from 3 with the 'B' teams from Brockholes and Meltham joining Outlane in the mix and just 6 points between them. Meltham will not relish a visit from the leaders Slaithwaite after losing 9-0 away to them earlier in the season. Bottom team, Brockholes 'B' have only won one of their last ten matches and have to visit Almondbury Lib this week and points for all the bottom three look precious but scarce this week.

The top two in Section 4 are easing away from the chasing pack as they open up a 21 point gap to third-placed Lindley BC 'B' who welcome the leaders, Huddersfield Recreation Club this week. The leaders have a 6-point lead over Denby Dale who have a game in hand and an easier looking fixture this week when they are at home to second-from-the bottom Netherton Con 'B'.

New Mill 'B' have moved into contention for the Section 5 title and a run of 7 wins in their last 8 matches has seen them hit top spot with just 6 points between the top three who seem destined to fight it out for the two promotion places. This week they go to bottom of the table David Brown Sports whilst the Rugby Club go to lowly Broad Oak 'B' and Marsh Lib complete the set of the top three playing away at bottom half teams when they go to Holmfirth 'B'.
