Focus on Division 4 relegation tumble

Veterans League

Preview of the 10-Man League Divisions 3, 4 & 5 fixtures for Tuesday 5 September

The bottom five teams in Division 4 will eventually change into a bottom two that are certain of relegation and another two teams that will await the decision of the League as to how many teams are going to be relegated from each division. Should that total be four to be relegated as indicated at the start of the season then only one of these five will escape the dreaded drop.

However at present only 7 points separate them and there is everything to play for so lets take a look at each of them and assess their chances of becoming that one in five. It is Ravensknowle Park that sit 7th at present but they have played one more match than the two teams immediately behind them. It is difficult to see them getting very many points from either of their two matches still to be played so there is every chance that they will get sucked back into the drop zone.

Three of the bottom five teams haven't won an away match all season and the Rugby Club are one of those three, which is bad news for them with 2 of their remaining 3 matches to be played away from home. In Almondbury BC 'B's remaining fixtures are matches against the top two teams in the division, Lindley Lib 'B' and Springwood. Both are jockeying for the title so no easy pickings are likely here. The third match being at home to fellow strugglers Huddersfield RUBC which could be the deciding match in the battle to stave off a relegation place.

It has been a difficult year for Kirkheaton Con 'B'after promotion the previous season. They have been badly hampered by first team calls which has resulted in four first year bowlers playing more often than would have been the norm and the expectation within the club is that it would be good to go down to enable the new bowlers to learn their trade at that level before more challenging matches in the future. Primrose Hill Lib sit at the bottom of the table with 2 of their 3 remaining fixtures against top 3 teams and both are away from home as well.

I'm going out on a limb here but I forecast that whichever team wins the match between Almondbury BC 'B' and Huddersfield RUBC this Tuesday will be the one of these five that stays up for another season.

Elsewhere the Division 4 title chase looks to be between Lindley Lib 'B' and Springwood with the Libbers leading by 9 points but having played a match more than their closest rivals. However the leaders do have a home encounter with bottom of the table Primrose Hill Lib this Tuesday whilst Springwood have to go to third-placed Marsh Lib which could open up a totally different scenario if things go wrong for them.

At the top of Division 3 it looks like it is only time that will delay Golcar Lib 'B' from collecting the title but that won't be this week as they have to go to 3rd placed Denby Dale who need the points to resurrect their own promotion hopes. Almondbury Lib would hope to narrow the gap to the leaders but a trip to Paddock I&C is never one undertaken with great hopes of a big win although they would hope to claim more points than their Lindley rivals to reduce the lead held by them.

Paddock I&C are one of four teams on the fringe of a relegation place along with Outlane, Slaithwaite and Kirkheaton C&BC 'A'. Outlane go to Slaithwaite this week so that could sort some matters out.

Similarly Lockwood Con 'B' could leap out of the drop zone altogether with a big win over visitors Kirkhaeton C&BC 'A' who they could overtake with the right result. The bottom two teams go head-to-head and defeat for Meltham 'B' could confirm their relegation and revive hopes of a great escape for Huddersfield Recreation Club.

The two teams to be promoted out of Division 5 are unlikely to be finalised this week but they could go a long way to sorting that matter out. Leaders Milnsbridge 'B' have to play at Greenhead Park and Brockholes 'B' could improve their promotion hopes by beating a visiting Broad Oak 'B' side.
