Veterans 10-Man League
Review of matches played on Friday 10 September
The last of the four Friday fixture programmes was staged this week for Sections 1 & 2 teams to take the number of games played to 23 of the 26 in the full season. Kirkheaton Con 'A' became the first team in any Section to confirm their promotion following a 7-2 away win at New Mill 'A' and they will play in Section 1 next season. Elsewhere things remain in limbo although Lockwood Con took a big stride forward to retaining their Section 1 title with a 6-3 home win over Rastrick albeit with a 117-116 aggregate scoreline whilst their nearest rivals, Elland C&BC 'A' were going down by that same 6-3 scoreline at Marsh United. That gives the holders a 6-point cushion with just 3 matches remaining with 2 of theirs at home whilst Elland have 2 away matches in their final 3 so the advantage lays with the holders. Longwood are in their best form of the season winning 8 of their last 9 matches and with 2 of their final 3 games being at home could still feature as at least a runner-up contender. Their one away match remaining is at Elland C&BC so that could be the pivotal moment in the run-in. Meanwhile at the foot of the table the feature game saw Meltham 'A' beat Netherton Con 'A' by 6-3 to make the gap between these bottom three teams extend to 4 points.
That home defeat for New Mill 'A' by Kirkheaton Con 'A' may have damaged their Section 2 promotion hopes but that was their first defeat in their last 12 matches so a return to that form could make the final 3 weeks really interesting. Lindley BC 'A' took full advantage of other results to register an 8-1 home win over Kirkheaton C&BC 'A' to go 8 points clear over the other promotion hopefuls. Broad Oak 'A' had a good 6-3 away win at Thorpe Green whose promotion hopes disappeared with that result but they will continue to have a big say in who does go up as they have to play 3 teams above them in their final 3 fixtures including New Mill 'A' and Lindley BC 'A'. A return to Thorpe Green's first half-season form would be welcomed by Broad Oak 'A' who look to have the easiest run-in to the season conclusion. At the other end of the table Lockwood Con 'B' need 8 points from their final 3 matches to be safe but those 3 matches include New Mill 'A' (h) and Lindley BC 'A' (a) and with their other match also away from home they may have to rely on other team failings rather than their own efforts.
