Final day of the Inter-District League season

League News

The final match of the Yorkshire Veterans Inter-District League season is today with the Huddersfield team facing the Bradford team who are one place and 22 points above them in the table. Only a win of 39-17 or better will see the Huddersfield team take third place off their Friday rivals. Going the other way the Halifax team are one place and two points behind the Huddersfield side who are in 4th place. The threat from Aire & Wharfe shouldn't be ignored either, they are 16 points behind the Huddersfield team but are playing a Castleford team that have lost all seven matches they have played this season. The Huddersfield team has never finished lower than fourth place in the recorded history of the competition, although they have finished 4th in two of the last three seasons.

The West Riding team are almost certainly the 2026 League Champions despite already having completed their season they hold a lead of 53 points over Leeds who need an unheard-of final-day win score of 54-2 over Skipton to deny the West Riding team the title. I may be premature, but I don't think so. So congratulations to the West Riding team on an outstanding season.

The Home team will once again play their match at Lowerhouses with the team being: Stephen Haigh, Bob Dickinson, Ray Whitwam, Graham Sigsworth (captain), John Bloomer, Adrian Cooper, Martyn Skuse and Mick Chapman. The Away team are at The Harold Club BD12 0UD. The team is Malcolm Gilbert (captain), Garry Senior, Steven Haigh, Ian Ross, Andy Lumb, Edwin Haigh, Ian Ross and Dave Pollard. Reserves Derek Hewitt and Tim Poulter.

The Home team captain, Graham Sigsworth has indicated to his teammates that this will be his last match as captain as he intends to step down after this last match of the season. This has been his first season in that role. Graham also joined the League's Management Committee at the same time, but there is no news of him standing down from that role as well.

So that will make it at least three vacancies that the Management Committee has to find replacements for, before the start of next season, following the resignation of Paul English in his dual role of League and Competition secretaries.

FINAL DAY FIXTURES Friday 4 September
