Winter League
A Review of the Division 5 & 6 fixtures played on Thursday 1 February
Division 6 bowlers should be aware that this Thursday (8 February) is the closing date for entries into the Division 6 Qualifying Round of the 2024 Winter Cup competition. Full details & Entry Form
Slaithwaite have a very healthy 10-points lead at the top of the Division 5 table after a 6-2 win over Outlane pushed them clear but that hasn't ended Outlane's hopes of claiming the second promotion place although they are no longer the favourites to do that. Springwood suffered a major setback to both their title and promotion pushes after going down to a surprise 2-6 defeat against Netherton Con B who were collecting only their second win of the season.
It was a good day for the bottom two as Huddersfield Recreation Club B also won this time overcoming Jackson Bridge with a whitewash 8-0 scoreline to also collect their second win of the season and end a six match losing run. Those two shock results will have made Mirfield A nervous about their future as they are now within the sights of the Recreation Club who have played a match more.
Brockholes B are emerging as the biggest threat to Springwood's promotion hopes after a 6-2 win over Almondbury BC B who, after a torrid first half of the season, have settled into some form and their Division 5 status now looks secure. The Brockholes B team played a major part in last season's fantastic last-day climax to the Division 5 season and they are building up their own points tally with the intent of being in the last day promotion mix in their own rights themselves this time around.
Linthwaite Hall are the Division 6 Champions and the intent is to present the trophy to the winning team prior to the start of the final day matches this Thursday at Lockwood Park Rugby Club. An 8-0 win over Golcar C&BC clinched the title for the new team from Linthwaite Hall but who goes up with them remains in the balance.
Last Thursday's clash between the two contenders saw Huddersfield RUFC beat New Mill C 6-2 to take the outcome down to the final day of the season. Cowcliffe B won their final fixture when seeing off Mirfield B 6-2 but that wasn't enough to keep them in the promotion picture despite winning 6 of their last 7 matches. Broad Oak and Kirkheaton Con B shared the points 4-4 which means that the destiny of the 2nd relegation place hangs in the balance between these two teams until the final end of the season next Thursday.
