Bucking the trend

At a time when all we seem to hear about is Pubs and Clubs closing their greens and turning them into beer gardens, car parks or building sites, here is a club bucking the trend.

Hightown Sports in Liversedge was a club in decline with an ageing membership and a green suffering from a lack of funds. Enter the pub landlord who instead of closing the green decided to get involved and start to play.

Not only that he has funded restoration work on the green and recruited several of his regulars (all in their 20’s) who play in the pubs football and pool teams and got them playing bowls. They have just completed their first season in one of the local leagues and have reached their leagues cup final on Saturday.

Today we have done the end of season work as they look forward joining more leagues next year. A green that could easily have been lost is now thriving again and looking good. It’s just a pity there aren’t more landlords with the same mindset.

It proves that young people if given the opportunity to play bowls can enjoy it. We just need to get them on the green and make it a bit of fun.
