Bill Blackburn has been in touch with me again with another interesting snippet of bowling trivia. This time it is about the history of ladies bowling.

Jeff - bit of interesting trivia.

I have just read your report on the ladies C of C where Lorraine Hirst lost out in semis. I noticed a name in quarter finals which struck a bell, Karen Galvin. In 1978 I started the first competition in Yorkshire for ladies where they could win money instead of powder compacts, cut glass vases, umbrellas, etc. It was at Linthwaite Hall. I persuaded a local supermarket holder, David Ingham, to sponsor it, he also donated a trophy in memory of his late wife, Kathleen.

In the first year I had 64 entries from all over Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cheshire and from Birmingham.

In the second year a young left hander from Warrington called Karen Galvin, about 19 or 20 years old won it, and won it another twice in the following three years. She later married a county bowler named Tommy Johnson and had a son, named Ian. Sadly they later divorced and she reverted to her maiden name. Ian now bowls at the Griffin and has reached one or two final days in our area. Well done Karen. Bill Blackburn
