Mirfield League
Review of matches played 20 July 2021

The three top teams in Division 1 all had home games this week and all won their fixtures by big margins. The biggest of those coming from Pudsey 'A' with a whitewash 12-0 home win over Lower Hopton 'B' which places them 10 points behind the leaders, Thongsbridge 'A', with a game in hand. Thongsbridge 'A' and Lower Hopton 'A' both recorded 10-2 home wins to retain the running order and 2-point margin at the summit. Only one team in the bottom half of the table won this week and that was bottom team Ossett Flying Horse 'A' with a surprise 7-5 home win over Littlemoor 'A'. That win enabled them to creep nearer the other strugglers although they remain 15-points adrift of safety and will need a few more similar results before expecting to cause any consternation among their lower table rivals.
The biggest win of the day in Division 2 was the 11-1 victory of Crossgates 'B' over Pudsey 'B' which left Pudsey perilously close to the relegation places and now just a point above Brighouse Sports with The Harold Club a further 5 points adrift at the foot of the table. Kirkheaton Con 'A' remain top of the table despite not playing this week when their fixture against Whitkirk was called off due to a COVID incident. Alverthorpe 'A' and Woodlands Park are their nearest challengers but neither cashed in on the leader's absence. Alverthorpe did win 7-5 at lowly Brighouse Sports courtesy of a bigger aggregate whilst Woodlands Park could only collect 3 of the 12 points at stake when they travelled to play Spen Victoria 'A'.

The four home teams in Division 3 all won their matches including table-toppers Shipley who beat falling previous leaders Dodworth by 8-4 which meant that they were the only losers in the top half of the table. Cleckheaton Sports 'A' and Milnsbridge 'A' are firmly rooted in the relegation places with little chance of saving their current status and both lost again this week.
Division 4 leaders Thornhill C&BC fell to a shock 5-7 defeat at bottom of the table at Denby Grange 'B' allowing Lowerhouses to take closer order with the gap to the top just 5 points now after their 9-3 win over Ossett Flying Horse 'B'. Ominously in 3rd place is a fast-improving Farsley team who beat Broad Oak 'A' 8-4 on their own lawn to overtake them and jump into third place some 9 points behind the leaders but with a game in hand. Kirkheaton Con 'B' halted a run of 2 consecutive defeats with a 7-5 home win over Spen Victoria 'B'
Morton House lost for the second time this season and for the 2nd consecutive time away from home when losing 4-6 at Alverthorpe 'B' 4-6 but remain top of the Division 5 table despite that setback. The teams in 2nd and 3rd positions met this week with Cleckheaton Sport 'B' coming out on top 6-4 over Heckmondwike but still remain 10 points behind the leaders. Second from bottom Marsh United beat third from bottom The Harold Club 'B' to narrow the gap to safety to two points but Cowcliffe appear to be making no impression on any of the teams above them losing 2-8 at Longwood this week.

Thongsbridge 'B' had a good away win this week 6-4 at Rastrick but come under pressure from Thorpe Green 'A' who sit 11 points behind the Division 6 leaders with a game in hand. A point further back are Netherton Con although their result is not yet in at the time of writing this review but inevitably they will be closer than the 11 point gap that currently separates them from the leaders.
A 9-1 home win for Shepley puts them 30 points ahead of Springwood who have 2 games in hand of the Division 7 leaders with a win for Royds Park placing them 3rd as all three matches in this Division saw the home teams come out on top.
MIRFIELD LEAGUE BOWLSNET PAGES
Am I right in thinking this League is having promotion and relegation ?
I’ve been surprised about the number of Huddersfield Vets bowlers not being aware that relegation and promotion applies this year and bowlers who just don’t know in other Leagues.
Jeff, do you know which of the Leagues, you listed a few weeks ago showing the reduction in teams, have promotion and relegation? If so, could they be published showing which have and which haven’t promotion and relegation?
Thanks,
Philip of Lindley
