Back to league business for giant-killers

League News

Veterans 10-Man League

Last week we were applauding the giant-killing feats of three Section 4 teams in the Bistro but that didn't include the two top teams in that Section who this week feature as our Match of the Day in Tuesday's fixture programme. Denby Dale and Huddersfield Recreation Club have 2 of the League's 3 remaining unbeaten league records but one of those will go this week as the two heavyweights square up to each other. Both have won 5 out of 5 league games, both have 32 points with an aggregate difference of 26 putting Denby Dale top and they also have the home advantage this week. Two of last week's Bistro successes meet up when Lindley BC 'B' have a very winnable home fixture against Primrose Hill Lib unless the visitors bring their Bistro form with them. There are two teams in this Section looking for their first wins of the season and both have away games this week which may not help their cause. Kirkheaton Cons 'B' and Almondbury BC 'B' are at Ravensknowle Park 'A' and Elland C&BC 'B' respectively and it would be a surprise if either had lifted themselves out of the two relegation places after these matches.

Section 1 leaders, Lockwood Park, have a home fixture against 3rd placed Cowcliffe who have failed to win either of their away matches to date whilst second-placed Elland C&BC 'A' travel to lowly Netherton Con 'A' hoping to reduce the 2-point gap between themselves and the leaders. After beating Lockwood Con twice in a week, Marsh United 'A' can confidently look forward to a trip to play lowly Meltham 'A' to test out their latest form surge. Thongsbridge 'A' are in danger of being cast seriously adrift at the bottom as they look to win for the first time this season but can expect little sympathy at Lindley Lib 'A' this week who have their own concerns being just 5 points ahead of the relegation places.

The top three teams in Section 2 all have away fixtures this week giving fourth-placed Kirkheaton Con 'A' an added incentive to win Tuesday's Kirkheaton Derby match. Leaders Thorpe Green take their unbeaten record to Bradley & Colne who have won all their three home games to date so a fair test is expected. After a poor start to the season Brockholes 'A' have won their last two away matches to move out of the relegation places and will be looking for a first home win of the season when entertaining third-placed Broad Oak 'A' this week.

The focus in Section 3 is at the foot of the table where the bottom two meet at Marsh United where the 'B' side have Springwood as visitors. The teams in 3rd and 4th places go head-to-head when Golcar Lib 'B' host Slaithwaite. All the top four teams have the same Won-4 Lost-1 records to date but there is 9 points between first and fourth so the pointers are there for these two teams that defeat could leave them well adrift of the competition for the promotion places.

There are just 14 points between top and bottom in Section 5 so a run of even two good wins can dramatically alter league placings and wins against close teams can be worth more than the point on offer. Two games fit into that category this week, one at each of the table. At the foot of the table David Brown Sports welcome Dalton who are two places above them with identical 1-4 win records but 5 points between them and an opportunity for both teams to make progress at the expense of close opponents. Leaders Marsh Lib will be testing out Hemplow 'B's unbeaten home record and aiming to maintain the 3-point gap between the teams. Sat between them is the Rugby Club who go to Kirkheaton C&BC 'B' where a good win could push them to the top of the pile.
