Away form key for Section 1 survival

Veterans 10-Man League

Preview of matches to be played on Tuesday 24 August

Thongsbridge 'A' and Netherton Con 'A' occupy the two relegation places in Section 1, neither has won an away game all season but both make the 10th attempt to do just that this Tuesday. Netherton have given themselves some hope of survival having got back to within a point of Crosland Moor after two home wins and with Meltham just a further point away and playing Lockwood Con 'A' this week now would be a good time to win at Cowcliffe. Cowcliffe are not in the best of form easing past bottom team Thongsbridge 'A' 6-3 (112-108 aggregate) last week for a first win in their last 4 matches. Life could be more difficult for Thongsbridge 'A' as they have to go to title-chasers Elland C&BC 'A' who need to close the 6-point lead that Lockwood Con have built up over them. If Waterloo could take their home form on the road with them then they would be serious challengers at the top of the table but 2 wins from 9 away games is never going to unnerve the table toppers so a trip to play Marsh United 'A' this week is a big ask that needs addressing if they are to be seen as a real threat to the top two.

Kirkheaton Con 'A' lost their first away match of the season on Friday at Lindley BC 'A' and this Tuesday have to visit the only other team to beat them all season, Thorpe Green. That was a 3-6 home reversal in May and whilst revenge may be the Section 2 leader's incentive the need for points is more important for Thorpe Green as they reignite their promotion challenge having won 4 of their last 5 matches and they need to keep that run going. That win for Lindley BC 'A' took them back into second place and with another home match this week as bottom team Paddock I&C come calling then there is a real opportunity to consolidate that position. However, close behind sit Broad Oak and they have Hemplow 'A' as visitors this week whilst 4th placed New Mill 'A' have won their last eight league games and won't be deterred by Milnsbridge's good home record this week. The two teams sat above bottom team Paddock I&C are Kirkheaton C&BC 'A' and Lockwood Con 'B' and they go head to head this week and with a 12-point gap to reduce the Cricket Club's need is greater and anything other than a good win would send shockwaves through the club about their survival chances.

There is a big match in Section 3 this Tuesday as the top two teams, separated by just 2 points, go head-to-head. Second-placed Slaithwaite have home advantage over visitors Lowerhouses who have lost their last 2 away games but Slaithwaite need to avenge a 1-8 result at Lowerhouses in May to get their title challenge back on track. Golcar Lib 'B' and Holmfirth 'A' are poised to step in if there is a big defeat for either of the top two and both have home games this Tuesday. Holmfirth 'A' are capable of raising their game as shown when they beat Lowerhouses 7-2 two weeks ago but that has been their only win in four matches whilst Golcar Lib 'B' are on a four-match winning run which again included the scalp of the table leaders. The bottom two teams, Brockholes 'B' and Outlane have home games this week whilst the two teams immediately above them, Meltham 'B' and Marsh United 'B', are both away. The Brockholes 'B' v Marsh United 'B' catches the eye as a key encounter especially as Meltham cannot expect to return from playing Golcar Lib 'B' with many points.

Huddersfield Recreation Club have won their last 8 league games, have a flawless 7-0 home record, last week reached the final of the Sub-Team KO and sit at the top of Section 4 some 21 points ahead of 3rd placed Milnsbridge 'B' who come to visit this week. What can possibly go wrong? Denby Dale sit 3 points behind the leaders but with a game in hand, have won 13 of their 14 league games including the last five and this week travel to play lowly Thongsbridge 'B'. It is difficult to build a case for any other team to take the promotion step up but which one of that top two will finish as title winners is the trickier question.

If Marsh Lib are to muscle in on the promotion battle at the top of Section 5 then this is the week they need to show that resolve with a big home win. Nine points behind the leaders, Huddersfield RUBC, who they entertain this Tuesday and every incentive to rock the leaders. New Mill 'B' sit second and could be the main benefactors from a defeat of the leaders as they are 5 points off the top and have a home game against poor travellers Dalton this week who have only one win from 8 away games. One point separates the bottom 3 teams and the bottom two go toe-to-toe this week. Broad Oak 'B' moved ahead of Kirkheaton C&BC 'B' after a first win in 6 games last week but that could all change again this week as the Kirkheaton outfit have home advantage.
