We recently reported on two teams withdrawing from the Veterans League - Honley Con from the 6-man and Elland C&BC 'B' from the 10-man - but there is better news on the recruitment front with two new teams coming forward and possibly a third as well.

All the new teams are applying for membership to the 6-man competition. First up are Denby Dale who will be using the Clayton West green as their home green as theirs is already booked up for a ladies team on Monday afternoons. Elland C&BC have also applied to join the 6-man league.

A third application has been received by the League for a third Thongsbridge team to play in the 6-man league. However, with two teams already in the competition, they don't have a green to go with the application yet so the Management Committee awaits to see if they come forward with a complete proposal for their meeting on 16 January when the formation of the divisions will be finalised.

Clubs have until Monday 9 January to submit team applications for both the 10-man and 6-man leagues for the 2023 season.

The number of teams in each league is currently looking like 60 in the 10-man and 34 in the 6-man. The 10-man league lends itself to 5 divisions of 12 teams in each which will require some shuffling of teams. Anything less than such a structure will not be popular with teams in the lower divisions who feel that they have been treated unfairly over recent seasons with a 10-team Division 5 whilst the top two divisions have had 14 teams. That will be an overall reduction of one team in total.

The 6-man league has a net increase of one taking the total up to 34 teams. Last year the split in the number of teams in the three divisions was 12-10-11. Honley Cons withdrawal means the current split is 11-10-11. Depending on the Management Committee's judgement of the strength of the two teams coming into the league will guide them through placing them in the appropriate division. Then there may even be the Thongsbridge third team to factor into the equation if they resolve their home green situation.
