ALL OUR YESTERDAYS from 36 years ago:
The 21st staging of the Yorkshire CCGBA Websters Bitter Handicap Final was held at Crosland Moor Liberal Club on the last day of June 1985 with much self-congratulations and change in evidence.
This competition succeeded the former News of the World Handicap in 1965 and from this date is now known as the Websters Yorkshire Bitter Handicap. The Halifax brewers marked the milestone date by giving the Yorkshire Association an extra £210 in prize money - £10 for every year it has been running. This took the total prize money in the event, which attracted over 600 entries this summer, to £830 with £200 for the winner.
It wasn't all one-way traffic at presentation time of the finals at Crosland Moor Liberal Club for after the presentation of trophies to the winners, Yorkshire President Dennis Halloran made another presentation. This was a handsome plaque to Halifax Brewer representative Kevin McCabe as a thank you to Websters for 21 years of sponsorship of the Yorkshire competition.
The record of Finals Day shows that 4 Slathwaite bowlers featured and their results are captured in the matchday programme below which also shows that one of them, R. Whitwam, off a handicap of 3, beat scratch bowler JR Bentley of Cleckheaton Sports 21-16 in the final.
