Winter Cup new dates and more entries

Winter League

An update on the 2023 Winter Cup competition with a change in some of the dates and news on the number of entries which has now reached the impressive total of 80 with 6 more days before the closing date of Wednesday 25 January.

The League fixtures postponed this week at Milnsbridge and Springwood has had a knock-on effect with the plans for the Winter Cup.

The Qualifying Rounds at Milnsbridge and Springwood have now both been put back a week and will now be played on Wednesday 15 February. This is due to the postponed League matches now being played on Wednesday 8 February.

That delay infringes on the 6-week period before the beginning of April that the Springwood greenkeeper has always required to prepare the green for the summer season. As Springwood are hosting the Round of the Last 16 and Finals Day this year these have now been rescheduled. Easter weekend is 7-10 April to confuse things further.

The 16 qualifiers from the KO competitions on each of the 5 host greens go through to the Round of the Last 16 which will now be played on Wednesday 12 April. Finals Day involving the last 8 bowlers standing will be played on Sunday 16 April. Sunday being the preferred date at Springwood as more parking spaces become available on a Sunday.

Any bowler that has entered the competition but now finds that they are not available on any of the new dates can have their entry fee refunded if they withdraw before the Qualifying Round.

The entries keep rolling in and we have now reached the impressive total of 80 bowlers who will start out in the chase for our equally impressive Winter Cup. Each division has its own Qualifying Round and the current split of entries between the five divisions is:

Division 1 (Milnsbridge) - 18 entries (Qualifying Round 15 February

Division 2 (Springwood) - 13 entries (Qualifying Round 15 February)

Division 3 (Thorpe Green) - 10 entries (Qualifying Round 30 January)

Division 4 (Lindley Lib) - 15 entries (Qualifying Round 6 February)

Division 5 (Netherton Con) - 24 entries (Qualifying Round 9 February)

Entry online or on a usual League matchday is available until Wednesday 25 January.

Bowlers must have played a minimum of 4 League matches to qualify for the competition and there is a £3 entry fee for all bowlers.
